Changpeng Zhao: Crypto can be upgraded to post-quantum algorithms to address the impact of quantum computing

Gate News message. On March 31, Zhao Changpeng posted on the X platform saying that cryptocurrencies only need to upgrade to quantum-resistant (post-quantum) algorithms to deal with the impact of quantum computing, so there’s no reason to panic.

In terms of actual implementation, upgrading and coordination in a decentralized environment is difficult; the choice of algorithms could spark debate and lead to forks. Some projects that have stopped development may not be upgraded, which can help clean up such projects. In the short term, new code may introduce vulnerabilities or security issues—users who self-custody cryptocurrencies need to move their assets to new wallets.

Regarding the Bitcoin held by Satoshi, Zhao Changpeng noted that if the assets are moved, it means they are still active; if they are not moved within a certain period of time, the related addresses should be locked or destroyed to prevent them from being compromised by hackers. Fundamentally, encryption is easier than decryption, and stronger computing power has positive significance—cryptocurrencies will continue to exist after the quantum era.
