Apple plans to leverage generative artificial intelligence to accelerate custom chip design.

According to a report by Reuters on Thursday, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, stated in a speech last month at the ITF World Conference held in Belgium that one important lesson the company has learned is the need to use cutting-edge tools to design chips.

Sluggish stated: “EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies are crucial in supporting us to cope with the complexity of chip design. Generative artificial intelligence technology is expected to accomplish more design work in a shorter time and significantly improve productivity.”

According to reports, the two largest electronic design automation companies in the industry—Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys—have also been seeking to add artificial intelligence to their products.

Slaughter summarized the development history of Apple’s custom chips in his speech, from the early iPhone processors to the chips used in the latest Mac desktop computers and Vision Pro augmented reality headsets.
