The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved a $276.6 million electric rate increase for Consumers Energy, effective May 1, 2026, aimed at improving grid reliability and reducing outages. In a separate decision, DTE Electric Co. received approval for contracts to add over 1,300 megawatts of battery storage projects, significantly expanding its energy storage capacity. These decisions, while touted by regulators for grid improvements and supporting renewable energy, have drawn criticism from some groups, including a climate advocacy group that denounced the Consumers Energy rate hike as part of a politically driven energy crisis.
