KPMG is reportedly planning to cut nearly 600 jobs in its audit division, which accounts for about 6% of the department’s staff.

According to a Bloomberg report, an internal memo from KPMG indicates that affected employees have been informed that they may face layoffs, depending on the outcome of consultations. Sources say that if the proposal moves forward after the consultation process, up to 440 individuals are expected to leave the business unit.

The layoffs are primarily targeting assistant manager positions that have already obtained accounting qualifications.

A KPMG spokesperson stated that the current market environment means that the turnover rate for some areas of its audit team is very low, hence the proposal to resize these areas; this decision was not made lightly.

KPMG’s audit department has 7,100 employees.
