US-Iran "Negotiations" Tell Different Stories: Trump Claims Deal Close, Iran Dismisses as Fake News

Goldmoney reports that on March 24, Iran denied having negotiations with the United States. Previously, U.S. President Trump delayed the threat to bomb Iran’s power grid, citing “productive dialogue” with an unnamed Iranian official.
The Iranian Parliament speaker called it “fake news.” According to CCTV News, a senior Iranian official stated that Trump has no authority to set conditions or deadlines for negotiations. The official said that Iran and the U.S. have communicated through Egypt and Turkey to ease tensions, but the U.S. has not accepted Iran’s two core demands: compensation for damages and acknowledgment of Iran’s rights.
The official also mentioned that the issues of closing the Strait of Hormuz and laying mines are still among Iran’s options for responding to potential actions. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Bagheri said on Monday that Iran has received messages from some friendly countries over the past few days regarding the U.S. request to end the war through negotiations. Iran has responded appropriately based on its principles and has not engaged in any negotiations with the U.S.
A European official said that although there have been no direct talks between the two countries, Egypt, Pakistan, and Gulf states have been passing messages. A Pakistani official and another source told Reuters that direct negotiations to end the conflict could potentially take place this week in Islamabad.
The Pakistani official said U.S. Vice President JD Vance, along with Vitkov and Kushner, are expected to meet with Iranian officials in Islamabad this week, following a phone call between Trump and Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir.
The White House confirmed the call between Trump and Munir. When asked about the possible visit of Vitkov and Kushner to Islamabad, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said:
“These are sensitive diplomatic discussions. The U.S. does not conduct negotiations through the media. The situation is still evolving, and any speculation about meetings should not be considered final until officially announced by the White House.”
