The U.S. Department of Justice appeals a ruling by a federal judge that paused the Anthropic ban

Gate News message: On April 2 (Thursday, April 1), the U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice in court to appeal a ruling by a federal judge that blocked the government from banning the use of Anthropic technology. Last month, Judge Rita F. Lin of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco paused the Trump administration’s plan to cut ties with Anthropic so that the status quo could be maintained while the legal dispute continued, but she put the ruling on hold for one week, giving the government a chance to appeal. Earlier, Anthropic sued, challenging the Department of Defense’s decision to claim that its technology poses a threat to the U.S. supply chain. In a March 26 ruling, the judge sided with Anthropic, saying the government’s rationale for implementing the ban on the grounds of national security was questionable; the judge said the move looked more like “punishment” for Anthropic because the company had requested assurances that its technology would not be used to monitor Americans or for autonomous weapons deployments.
