The SRX Series, the brainchild of legendary NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, has found new life after ceasing operations last year. GMS Race Cars, the company helmed by Maury Gallagher, has secured the complete portfolio of SRX assets, including a fleet of 16 meticulously engineered racing vehicles and their corresponding equipment.
Joey Cohen Leads Vision for Asset Transformation
Joey Cohen, heading GMS Race Cars as president, articulated an ambitious vision for the acquired vehicles. “These machines were engineered to exceptional specifications by Ray, emphasizing robustness, handling excellence, and competitive performance,” Cohen stated. “We recognize tremendous potential to transition these vehicles into a fresh chapter—delivering premium track-day programs, turnkey customer racing solutions, and specialized motorsports competitions nationwide. The opportunities are virtually limitless.”
Cohen brings considerable expertise to the role, having previously held vice president responsibilities overseeing race operations at Legacy Motor Club, where he occasionally assumed lead crew chief duties in NASCAR Cup Series events.
Strengthening GMS’s Manufacturing Capabilities
Mike Beam, president of GMS Fabrication, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition: “This transaction represents a pivotal advancement for GMS Fabrication specifically. Our manufacturing divisions form the backbone of every competitive initiative, and we’re energized to advance this endeavor with the precision and dedication that characterizes GMS operations.”
The Original SRX Legacy
The SRX Series launched with substantial financial support from industry veterans George Pyne, Sandy Montag, and fellow NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart. The championship competition distinguished itself by uniting elite drivers from NASCAR, NTT IndyCar, NHRA, and Trans-Am on regional short-track venues throughout the United States. The series secured television partnerships with ESPN and subsequently CBS for comprehensive race coverage.
Marco Andretti secured the 2022 SRX Series Championship at Sharon Speedway on July 23, exemplifying the caliber of talent that participated in the competition.
Ray Evernham’s Perspective
Ray Evernham expressed satisfaction with the transition: “It’s deeply fulfilling to witness these vehicles continue their journey in a reimagined capacity. We designed them to deliver durability, responsive performance, and enjoyment—whether piloted by seasoned champions or newcomers to motorsports. GMS Race Cars represents the ideal steward to advance that legacy and inspire the next generation of driving enthusiasts.”
It’s important to note that GMS did not acquire the SRX brand designation, intellectual property rights, or broadcasting privileges. The organization has not yet disclosed its strategic direction for potential future racing ventures.
