There is a long-overlooked pain point in the blockchain world. Long-term storage doesn't collapse overnight; the problem is more insidious—data is slowly rotting.



At first glance, nothing seems amiss. The blockchain continues to generate blocks, transactions are processed as usual, and the monitoring dashboard shows green lights. But behind the scenes, the historical data is piling up thicker and thicker, and the pressure on nodes is silently increasing. Fewer and fewer participants can fully maintain the ledger. By the time people realize it, the promise of decentralization has quietly faded, and the network is no longer what it once was.

Why is this problem so common and so difficult to solve? Because storage and transactions are fundamentally different. Transactions can reduce costs through economies of scale, but storage logic is the complete opposite. During bear markets, prices are quiet, but it is precisely at this time that the demand for accessing historical data resurfaces. It is then that we realize that cheap storage solutions are often the least reliable.

The value backing most tokens is trading volume. The higher the popularity and the more frequent the transactions, the greater the demand for the token. But Walrus takes a different approach. The incentive logic for WAL revolves around reliability and uptime, not scale competition. Node rewards do not depend on how much data they store, but on whether they can reliably provide data access services in any market environment.

This difference may seem subtle, but it actually touches on the root of storage issues. Traditional storage relies on data replication. It appears safe at small scales, but as data volume grows, costs increase exponentially. Small nodes are the first to bear the brunt and are forced to exit the network. As participation becomes more centralized, the foundation of trust begins to shake.

Walrus adopts a different approach with erasure coding technology. It fragments data and disperses it across multiple nodes, with each node not needing to store the complete data. The system can still operate normally and recover data as a whole. More importantly, Walrus's architecture does not involve complex global state or maintaining cumbersome execution histories. It prevents storage from spiraling out of control from the source, and costs can be accurately predicted and managed.

This is the true meaning of decentralization. It’s not just about slogans, but about enabling each participant to bear the costs of long-term participation. In reality, most people drop out not because their beliefs change, but simply because the economic calculations no longer add up.

Walrus’s design specifically addresses this vulnerability. By controlling the burden on individual nodes, WAL rewards uptime and data availability, allowing even small nodes to operate long-term without being forced out due to storage volume surges.

The value of infrastructure has never been about short-term cheapness. The key is stability and predictability. Storage costs do not fluctuate with market hot or cold; WAL ties incentives to service quality, thoroughly eliminating opportunities for speculation and arbitrage.

When the market cools and attention shifts elsewhere, data access remains uninterrupted, and nodes stay decentralized. This is what Walrus truly aims to achieve—and why this mechanism can sustain itself in the long run.
