In China, in the past, everyone was taught that with reason you could travel the world, and without reason you could hardly move an inch. Now, shamelessness travels the world, and honesty makes it hard to take a single step. Good deeds are riddled with holes, while bad deeds are flawless. Bad people are confident in their wickedness, while good people are battered and bruised. On stage, they talk about rules, but off stage, they rely on relationships. They mouth justice, but their hearts are full of interests. On the surface, they appear righteous, but their words are filled with sordid deals. Fair-weather friends and followers are like wallflowers; no matter how good the food, you can't feed them enough. Put away your generosity, be it for calculations or pettiness. Your enthusiasm only makes others think you're naive and wealthy, and no one will remember your kindness. Here, cows and sheep can be fed, pigs and dogs can be fed, but human hearts cannot be fed. So in this society, talking about relationships, interests, status, and money is common, but what is rarely discussed is morality, and even less so, the law.
