The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka's primary tropical lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers approximately 18,900 to 21,903 acres (7,648 to 8,864 hectares). Plans have been made to expand the total protected area to over 88,960 acres (36,000 hectares) to conserve biodiversity. Other major forest areas include the 100,000-acre Nilgala savanna.
Sinharaja Rainforest Area: Originally 18,900–21,903 acres, it is undergoing expansion to 88,960 acres, including buffer zones.
Total Forest Cover: While the primary rainforest is concentrated, Sri Lanka has about 1.93 million hectares (approximately 4.77 million acres) of total forest cover.
Key Regions: The southwestern wet zone holds the highest concentration of dense, tropical rainforest.
These figures refer to protected and remaining native forest areas rather than the entirety of Sri Lanka's jungle coverage, which varies by conservation status.
