Instant Checkout Function for ChatGPT Purchases Failed - ForkLog: cryptocurrencies, AI, singularity, future
OpenAI has abandoned the Instant Checkout feature. The company will redirect users to the vendors’ own websites to complete purchases, reports The Information.
The AI startup launched Instant Checkout in September 2025. The tool allowed users to confirm orders, delivery, and payment without leaving ChatGPT.
Etsy, Walmart, and Shopify quickly integrated the solution to enable customers to pay directly within the chat bot. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein called this a “new frontier” for online retail.
Forrester senior analyst Emily Pfeiffer emphasized that connecting vendors proved to be a complex process, and Instant Checkout often experienced errors.
OpenAI could have used data from retailer websites to gather information about products, but details about availability, delivery times, and costs were often inaccurate or outdated.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company has “prioritized” improving product search and discovery within the chat bot.
Shopify highlighted that a new e-commerce feature will be introduced in ChatGPT. Buyers will still be able to find vendor products within the chat bot, but completing the purchase will be done on the retailers’ own sites.
“Three in One”
OpenAI is creating a “super app” from ChatGPT — a unified ecosystem for the AI assistant Codex, the Atlas browser, and the chat bot. These three products will be integrated into a single desktop application.
She added that fragmentation “slowed down and hindered achieving the desired level of quality.”
Earlier, it was reported that OpenAI aims to incorporate the video generator Sora into ChatGPT.
The main focus of the “super app” is on agent-based AI — a system that not only answers questions but autonomously performs tasks on a computer. It can write code, analyze data, and work online.
The idea is that ChatGPT will serve as the “entry point,” while Codex and Atlas will be the working environment without the need to switch between windows.
Simo called recent successes of Anthropic in attracting users “a wake-up call.”
The OpenAI mobile app will continue to operate unchanged. The strategy is focused on desktop, developers, advanced users, and corporate clients.
Recall that in March 2026, OpenAI integrated the Shazam music recognition service into ChatGPT.
