Google's quantum computing paper is out, and the crypto community is buzzing again—but Satoshi Nakamoto had the answer back in 2010:
"If it's incremental, we can still transition to stronger algorithms. When you first run the upgraded software, it will re-sign all your funds with the new signature algorithm—by creating a transaction that sends to yourself."
Fifteen years ago, he neither denied the threat nor chose to hard-fight it, but instead provided a feasible upgrade path.
Looking back today:
Google research shows that the quantum resources needed to crack Bitcoin are 20 times less than expected, with the time window moved up to 2029.
Blockstream launched the SHRIMPS scheme, which is three times more compact than the post-NIST quantum standard.
BIP-360 has been incorporated into the quantum-resistant upgrade path.
The threat is accelerating, but the answer remains the same—early planning, gradual upgrades.
Satoshi Nakamoto's 2010 post is still valid today.
