So this happened to me last week - people kept asking why I'm calling them as 'Private' when I'm literally not doing anything different. Checked my phone, caller ID was on, everything looked normal. Started digging into settings and honestly it was frustrating because I had no idea how to remove private number from my calls.
Turned out it's not always obvious where these settings hide. On Android, you basically need to go into your Phone app settings, find Calling accounts or Supplementary services, then look for Caller ID options. Different phones put it in different spots - Samsung does it one way, Google Pixel another way. The trick is telling your network to actually show your number when you call out. Some phones have an Advanced Protection feature that can lock this down too, so check there if the option is greyed out.
For iPhone users, iOS has the Show My Caller ID toggle buried in Settings > Apps > Phone. If you've got multiple lines (eSIM plus physical SIM), you gotta enable it separately for each one or your number will still show as private on some calls.
If none of that works, there are USSD codes you can try - like dialing *31# to force your number visible on all calls, or *#31# to check your current status. Honestly these are pretty direct commands to your carrier's network.
When I still couldn't figure out how to remove private number status, I did a full network reset. On Android that's Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. iPhone is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings. Both will wipe saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth connections too, but usually fixes the sync issue between your phone and carrier.
Other stuff that messes this up: old SIM cards (seriously, if yours is over 5 years old, it might not play nice with 5G networks), privacy apps with deep permissions like Truecaller or RoboKiller, or just switching between different network types. If you're roaming internationally, the caller ID signal can get lost bouncing through different networks.
Basically if your calls are stuck showing private, start with checking your phone's caller ID settings, then try the network reset if that doesn't work. Most of the time it's just a setting you didn't know existed or your phone needs to resync with the carrier.
