The United States has charged two Chinese pharmaceutical companies and six Chinese citizens with using cryptocurrency to facilitate fentanyl trafficking and money laundering.

Gate News reports that on March 26, a federal grand jury in Ohio, USA, indicted two Chinese pharmaceutical companies (Shandong Believe Chemical Company Pte Ltd. and Shandong Ranhang Biotechnology Co. Ltd.) and six Chinese nationals. The prosecution alleges that the defendants sold substances, including dexmedetomidine, to U.S. and overseas drug traffickers as fentanyl diluents, and instructed customers to pay via their controlled cryptocurrency wallets, with funds subsequently layered and transferred to overseas financial institutions. The case was driven by FBI's "Operation Box Cutter." Three defendants are also charged with attempting to provide material support to a Mexican drug cartel designated as a foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, the defendants face up to life imprisonment for drug trafficking, as well as up to 20 years for money laundering and terrorism-related charges.
