Anthropic is considering developing its own AI chips; the project is still in its early stages

Gate News message, April 9, according to Reuters, three people with knowledge of the matter said that the artificial intelligence company Anthropic is exploring the possibility of autonomously designing AI chips. The company and its competitors are working to address the shortage of AI chips, which are critical for powering and developing more advanced AI systems. The people with knowledge of the matter said that Anthropic’s chip design plans are still in their early stages, and that the company may ultimately still choose to buy AI chips rather than design them itself. At present, the company has not yet determined a specific design approach and has not formed a dedicated team to handle the project. Anthropic currently uses a variety of chips to develop and run its AI models Claude, including Google-designed tensor processing units (TPUs) and chips from Amazon.
