DeepMind's Hassabis Predicts AGI Within Years, Proposes U.S. Oversight Framework

According to Demis Hassabis in a blog post published Tuesday, artificial general intelligence will arrive within a few short years and will prove more transformative than electricity or fire. The Google DeepMind CEO said AGI—when computers can understand, learn, and perform tasks as well as or better than humans—should not be compared with advances like the internet or mobile computing due to its magnitude of impact. "We've essentially found a way to make sand think," Hassabis wrote. Hassabis also proposed establishing a U.S. Frontier AI Standards Body, modeled after financial regulatory authority FINRA, to evaluate frontier AI models before deployment. The proposal would be funded primarily by the AI industry and staffed by independent technical experts. He warned that AI capabilities are advancing faster than society can manage risks, noting cybersecurity threats from today's systems and potential biological and nuclear risks from future ones.
