LG Display Reports Q2 Operating Loss of 107.7 Billion Won on Seasonal Demand

LG Display reported an operating loss in Q2, marking its first quarterly loss in four quarters since last year's Q2. The company posted Q2 revenue of 5.6121 trillion won and an operating loss of 107.7 billion won. The loss was attributed to seasonal off-peak demand as finished product manufacturers adjusted component inventory ahead of second-half new product launches, combined with one-time costs related to workforce efficiency measures. Despite the quarterly loss, LG Display emphasized that underlying business profitability remained positive when excluding one-time factors. The display manufacturer had returned to profit in Q1 before slipping back into the red in Q2.

LG Display Q2 Financial Results Match Market Forecasts

LG Display's Q2 revenue of 5.6121 trillion won was nearly identical to the 5.587 trillion won recorded in the same period last year. The operating loss of 107.7 billion won also aligned closely with last year's Q2 loss of 116 billion won. According to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system, these figures were provisionally compiled on a consolidated basis.

The Q2 loss conversion was within market expectations. Yonhap Infomax compiled earnings forecasts from seven major domestic securities firms that submitted estimates within the past two months, showing consensus expectations of 5.624 trillion won in revenue and 102.6 billion won in operating loss for Q2.

LG Display Reports First-Half Profit Turnaround

On a cumulative first-half basis, LG Display achieved a profit turnaround. The company's first-half revenue totaled 11.1461 trillion won, down 4.3% from 11.6523 trillion won in the same period last year. Operating profit reached 39 billion won, reversing from an 82.6 billion won operating loss in the first half of last year.

First-half earnings improved by 121.6 billion won compared to the prior year period. The improvement was attributed to business structure advancement centered on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology and enhanced cost competitiveness, which partially offset the impact of seasonal off-peak demand and one-time costs.

LG Display Focuses on OLED Technology and Cost Innovation

LG Display stated it will continue profitability improvements in the second half through differentiated technology development and cost innovation utilizing artificial intelligence transformation (AX). The company's strategy involves applying AX across the entire process of product development, manufacturing, and production to enhance operational efficiency, rather than limiting efforts to simple cost reduction.

In the small and medium-sized display business, the company will concentrate capabilities on technologies where it holds competitive advantages, strengthening business competitiveness centered on high-end products. The company plans to respond flexibly to customer demand and market changes based on a stable development and mass production system.

For the large display business, LG Display will expand its position in the premium market with products featuring differentiated technology and cost competitiveness. The company specifically plans to increase the lineup and shipment volume of high-value-added products such as gaming OLED monitors, in line with the accelerating transition from liquid crystal display (LCD) to OLED in the monitor market.

Kim Sung-hyun, Chief Financial Officer of LG Display, stated: "Even in Q2, excluding one-time factors, the underlying profitability of the business maintained a positive trajectory. In the second half, we will continue to improve annual performance through advanced cost innovation and strengthened business competitiveness, thereby solidifying a stable profit structure."
