Tension in the Caribbean
The Caribbean is boiling with military tension. Trump has authorized the shooting down of Venezuelan planes that approach “dangerously” close to U.S. vessels. A decision that seems excessively aggressive to me and could have catastrophic consequences for the entire region.
It all began when two Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew over the USS Jason Dunham in international waters. The Pentagon interpreted it as a provocation from Maduro, but weren't they patrolling near Venezuelan territory? The American hypocrisy is overwhelming to me.
“If they do, they'll be in trouble… they will be shot down,” Trump threatened in a broadcast from the White House. He gave carte blanche to General Dan Caine and the captains to make tactical decisions. That is, a license to kill without consultation.
The militarization is already underway: ten F-35 fighters deployed in Puerto Rico. This supposedly anti-drug movement has already led to the sinking of a Venezuelan vessel with 11 dead. Is it really about fighting drug trafficking or is it another excuse to destabilize a government that does not submit to their interests?
Analysts see this as an attempt to reaffirm U.S. control in a strategic area. Meanwhile, Caracas denounces these incursions as acts of deliberate provocation.
We are facing a dangerous turning point. The Caribbean has become a military chessboard where any false move could trigger a direct armed conflict. The threat is no longer theoretical, but tangible and alarming.
