The discussion about the threat of Quantum Computers to Bitcoin has been misunderstood by many.
A common saying on the internet is: when the Quantum Computer arrives, the mining difficulty will collapse. But this simplifies the issue. The truth is - even if Quantum Computers really appear, the proof-of-work mechanism of Bitcoin is relatively secure; it would just involve switching to a hash algorithm that is more resistant to quantum attacks. Doesn't sound so scary, right?
But the key issue is not here.
What will truly be overturned is your signature system. Specifically, once the Shor algorithm matures, it will be a dimensionality reduction attack on the currently used ECDSA elliptic curve digital signature system. This is the core reason that has caused an uproar in the tech community.
Recently, discussions in the English community about Bitcoin Quantum have been focused on this point: when Quantum Computing can truly break ECDSA, your private key and signature will have no defense. This is the real risk that lies ahead.
