Is COMP worth holding for the long term? An in-depth analysis of the investment value of the Compound lending protocol

How Does Compound Reshape the DeFi Ecosystem?

Founded in August 2017, Compound is a decentralized lending protocol based on the Ethereum blockchain. It breaks the monopoly of traditional financial institutions, allowing anyone to participate in the lending market. Users can deposit their crypto assets into liquidity pools to earn interest, while borrowers can access liquidity in a transparent, trustless manner. This model may seem similar to bank lending, but its essence is fundamentally different.

Compared to banks, Compound is built on the blockchain, relying on smart contracts for automatic execution, eliminating the need for manual approval, and providing transaction transparency far beyond traditional finance. More importantly, users have full control over their assets instead of trusting intermediaries. This is the core appeal of decentralized finance (DeFi).

COMP Token: How Do Incentive Mechanisms Drive Ecosystem Growth?

In 2020, the Compound team launched an innovative strategy—“Lending Mining.” Whether users deposit, borrow, or repay, participating in platform activities earns COMP tokens as rewards. This aggressive incentive design quickly attracted a large influx of users.

COMP is an ERC-20 token based on Ethereum, with a total supply of 10 million. In the distribution structure, 50.05% is reserved for community users, 23.96% for shareholders, and 25.99% for the team. Of the user portion, 42.3% is released through mining, producing approximately 850,000 tokens annually, with the mining cycle planned to complete by June 2024.

Currently, the circulating supply has reached 9,668,189 tokens, with a circulation rate of an impressive 96.68%, indicating that the token supply is stabilizing, and selling pressure in later stages is relatively manageable.

Who Supports Compound’s Development?

Compound was founded in 2017 by University of Pennsylvania alumni Robert Leshner and Geoffrey Hayes. Leshner has an economics background and previously founded Robot Ventures; Hayes was an engineer at Postmates and later founded Safe Shepherd. As the project developed, more talent joined, including senior developer Antonina Norair and design director Jayson Hobby.

In terms of investors, Compound has completed three funding rounds, attracting over 31 investment institutions with a total of $70 million. The seed round in May 2018 raised $8.2 million, with investors including a16z, Coinbase, and Bain Capital. Series A in November 2019 raised $25 million, and Series B in November 2022 raised $37.6 million.

Additionally, Compound has established relationships with 26 key partners, including well-known traders and market makers such as Altonomy, Magnet Capital, and Amber AI. Their participation further affirms Compound’s market position.

Market Position and Development Potential Analysis

According to the latest data, COMP’s current price is $25.51, with a market cap of $246.64M, ranking 99th globally and 25th in the DeFi sector. Although its market cap ranking is relatively low, this precisely reflects that Compound still has significant growth potential.

In DeFi applications, Compound’s total value locked (TVL) has reached $1.14 billion, with a market share of 19.9%, ranking just behind Uniswap. This status highlights Compound’s importance as a DeFi pioneer. Notably, Compound is not limited to Ethereum; it has successfully expanded to Arbitrum and Polygon, greatly enhancing user accessibility and ecosystem diversity.

DeFi, as one of the most explosive sectors in recent years, has enormous growth potential. Compound has attracted attention from top investment funds, which typically focus on long-term value investing, further validating COMP’s credibility as a medium- to long-term holding asset.

COMP Price Trajectory: From Bull Market Peak to Bear Market Bottom

COMP was first listed in June 2020 at $58, then rapidly surged to $280 within the same month. During the 2021 bull cycle, COMP performed remarkably, soaring from $80 in November to $900 in May 2021, a more than 10-fold increase.

However, the good times did not last. Subsequently, COMP entered a continuous decline. By June 2022, it fell below its initial opening price, reaching a low of $26. Since mid-2023, COMP has been oscillating within a range, mainly between $30 and $80. Compared to its all-time high of $900, COMP has dropped 97%.

Currently, the $30–$80 range should serve as the bear market support level. Based on trend analysis, further sharp declines are limited. It is expected that in the second half of the year, the price will continue to bottom out and consolidate, with a potential breakout in the first half of 2024, possibly leading to a bullish trend as the broader market recovers.

How to Invest in COMP and Recommendations

For investors interested in participating, first create an account on a reputable trading platform and complete identity verification. Then, search for “COMP” in the platform’s search bar to locate the project, and choose to go long (bullish) or short (bearish) based on your judgment. Before investing, carefully assess your risk tolerance and set reasonable stop-loss and take-profit points.

Given COMP’s historical volatility and current price position, conservative investors can gradually build positions near the lower boundary of the range, while aggressive investors may focus on breakout opportunities in the first half of 2024. Regardless, COMP should be viewed as a medium- to long-term asset allocation rather than a short-term trading tool.
