From $1.3M to $12K: How Justin Bieber's 2022 BAYC Investment Collapsed
In early 2022, pop superstar Justin Bieber made a bold move into the booming NFT market, acquiring Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT #3001 for 500 ETH—worth approximately $1.3 million at the time. The purchase quickly cemented his status as one of the most visible celebrities in the BAYC community. Just four years later, that investment tells a cautionary tale of the volatile digital asset space: the same NFT now sits at roughly $12,000, representing a staggering 99% erosion in value.
The 2022 Bull Run That Never Lasted
Bieber’s timing in 2022 coincided with peak euphoria in the NFT sector. By mid-2022, just months after his purchase, the floor price of Bored Ape Yacht Club skyrocketed to $429,000—a breathtaking high that seemed to validate the most bullish believers. Yet this extraordinary peak would prove to be a fleeting moment. The prolonged “NFT winter” that followed triggered a comprehensive market collapse, dragging major projects down with it.
The Broader Market Bloodbath
Justin Bieber’s BAYC suffered alongside the entire NFT landscape. CryptoPunks, once considered the gold standard of NFTs, plummeted from a floor price exceeding $400,000 to around $60,000. Pudgy Penguins similarly crashed from nearly $100,000 to approximately $8,850. The data paints a sobering picture: across the three most prominent NFT collections, investor confidence has largely evaporated.
Can These Projects Recover?
According to market prediction platform Myriad, skepticism dominates the outlook. The platform estimates only a 16% probability that these three major NFT series will reclaim their historical highs before mid-2026. Meanwhile, BAYC’s creator Yuga Labs continues investing in ecosystem development, including launching an exclusive offline members club in Miami and progressing with the metaverse gaming project Otherside. Whether these initiatives can reignite market demand remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Justin Bieber’s 2022 investment illustrates the immense risks that come with early-stage, highly speculative digital assets.
