When the Agency redefines the boundary between Web3 and the traditional system
During a recent visit to Bali, Gavin Wood — co-founder of Ethereum and architect of Polkadot — addressed a fundamental issue dividing the crypto community: the true meaning of Web3 is not in technology, but in human action capability. This statement represents a crucial paradigm shift in how decentralization is understood.
The True Meaning of Web3 Goes Beyond Technology
When Gavin Wood coined the term “Web3” in April 2014, his vision was very different from how it is interpreted today. It wasn’t just about Ethereum as “Bitcoin with better scripting,” but a complete technological ecosystem that included smart contracts, peer-to-peer protocols like BitTorrent, decentralized browsers, and consensusless communication systems.
Over the years, however, the meaning of the term has been diluted and misunderstood. Today, many projects use it indiscriminately, losing sight of its original essence. That’s why Wood chose to reinterpret the concept through a different lens: Agency, meaning individual action capacity and personal sovereignty.
“The crucial question is not which technology to use, but why Web3 should matter to you compared to traditional banking apps, iPhones, or the Apple ecosystem. The answer is one: Agency,” explains Wood. The average user prefers centralized systems because they are convenient, until they realize that the line between convenience and control is becoming increasingly thin.
Why Decentralization Has Lost Credibility
The term “decentralization” has become ambiguous and weakened in public discourse. It is often confused with “distribution” rather than representing a true federated structure where decision-making power is genuinely transferred to individuals.
Wood emphasizes how the gap between theoretical promise and practical reality remains wide. Not even platforms considered “decentralized” — including Solana — truly offer their users the real Agency that Web3 should guarantee. Apple, Netflix, and the traditional banking system maintain control and limit user sovereignty.
“The true meaning of decentralization should be individual empowerment, not just the technical distribution of nodes,” implicitly reflecting Wood’s vision. What’s missing is awareness: people already have the mindset of Agency; they just aren’t aware of it yet.
Agency as a Competitive Factor: Ideas vs. Money
In the competition among blockchain ecosystems, an increasingly fierce rivalry based on economic incentives emerges. Rival projects attract developers and teams through massive funding, creating a competitive margin that’s hard to bridge.
Wood proposes a radically different approach: “It’s not about fighting money with money. We compete with ideas against money.” This strategy is based on the belief that short-term funding, without a shared vision, generates ephemeral value. Those who stay true to a genuine philosophy of Agency pursue long-term value.
“Incentives must be given at the right time, in the right way, and fairly,” clarifies Wood, distinguishing between organic growth strategies and simply “turning on the money tap for a football team” — a subtle but decisive margin in determining a project’s real success.
Educating to Bridge the Gap Between Theory and Practice
The ultimate meaning of Wood’s vision is encapsulated in a single phrase written on his backpack: “Educate to liberate — Education is the path to freedom.” It’s no coincidence that Wood has invested significant resources in projects like PBA (Polkadot Blockchain Academy).
Education represents the critical margin between mass adoption of Web3 and the failure of the revolution. It’s not about teaching “how to use a certain API” or “launching a meme coin quickly,” but about creating deep awareness of fundamental principles: economics, game theory, cryptography.
Courses should evolve to focus on how to reach ordinary users, explaining the meaning of Agency beyond the crypto community. When people understand that the true margin between digital slavery and freedom is awareness — not technology — then Web3 can fulfill its original promise.
Wood remains convinced of one thing: “If enough people truly use these technologies, the world can improve.” The margin between failure and success will depend on the ability to translate the philosophical vision of Agency into concrete educational actions that reach billions beyond the crypto-native circle.
