Iran Says Non-Combatant Countries Must Coordinate Before Transiting the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Defense Council issued a statement on the 23rd local time, stating that ships from non-belligerent countries wishing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz must coordinate with Iran. The statement also emphasized that Iran has committed to “reciprocal retaliation,” but has also promised to respond “immediately and destructively” to attacks on power plants and energy infrastructure. The Iranian Defense Council further warned that attacking Iran’s coast or islands would cut off shipping lanes and communication lines in the Gulf region and could lead to the laying of mines in the area, including along Iran’s coast.
