According to 1M AI News monitoring, OpenAI has indefinitely shelved its plans to launch a “adult mode” for ChatGPT. The Financial Times reports that this decision comes as the company refocuses on its core products, with employees and investors also expressing concerns about the potential societal impact of sexualized AI content. OpenAI confirmed to the Financial Times that the product is currently paused with no release timeline. The company stated that before making product decisions, it wants to complete long-term research on the impact of explicit sexual chat and emotional dependency, acknowledging a current lack of relevant empirical evidence. This is the latest move in OpenAI’s continued scaling back of “side quests.” In early March, reports indicated that OpenAI had once again postponed the launch of the adult mode, citing the need to prioritize work that is “higher priority for more users,” including enhancing model intelligence, personality, and proactivity.
