US-Iran Talks Show Progress: Trump Extends Deadline on Iran Energy Facilities by 10 Days, April 6th Becomes Next Focus
On March 27th, Trump posted on social media stating that at the request of the Iranian government, he was suspending the deadline for the destruction of (Iran’s) energy facilities for 10 days, until Monday, April 6th, 2026, at 8 PM Eastern Time. Negotiations are ongoing, and despite false reports from fake news media and others to the contrary, the negotiations are progressing very smoothly. U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated on the 26th that negotiations between the United States and Iran have made progress, but he would not disclose details. Rubio told reporters at the airport before heading to France for the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting that some countries are acting as intermediaries to facilitate the transmission of information, and some progress has indeed been made in the exchange of information, but it remains “an ongoing and volatile process,” so he would not discuss or disclose the specific content of the negotiations in front of the media. Additionally, according to The Wall Street Journal, mediators involved in the peace talks revealed that Iran has not requested the U.S. to suspend strikes on its energy facilities, nor has it given a final response to the 15-point plan to end the war. Trump stated that the extension was at Iran’s request. Mediators said that Iranian officials have informed them that Iran is interested in negotiations, but the Iranian leadership has not yet participated and made a final decision. Mediators stated that Iranian officials have asked the U.S. to reduce its excessive demands in the 15-point plan before agreeing to meet to discuss a possible ceasefire. Iran has also ruled out the possibility of discussing its missile program as a starting point for negotiations and is unwilling to commit to permanently ceasing uranium enrichment activities. Mediators said that the possibility of a successful ceasefire remains low because the hardline demands put forth by both the U.S. and Iran exceed what the other side can accept.
