On March 27, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. defense officials revealed the Pentagon is considering sending up to 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East to provide President Trump with more military options as he weighs potential talks with Iran. This force, which could include infantry and armored vehicles, would join approximately 5,000 Marines and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division already ordered to deploy to the region. It remains unclear where exactly in the Middle East these troops would be stationed, but they would likely be positioned within striking distance of Iran and its island of Kharg. Trump has repeatedly stated that he would open the Strait of Hormuz with or without the help of U.S. allies. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that any announcements regarding troop deployments would be made by the Department of Defense. As we have said, President Trump always has all military options on the table. A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. military forces in the Middle East, declined to comment.
