Fangda Carbon’s Application for Renewal of Civil Nuclear Safety Equipment Manufacturing License Approved

Daily Gansu Network, Lanzhou News (New Gansu · Gansu Daily Reporter Du Xueqin) - Recently, after a comprehensive review and on-site inspection by the National Nuclear Safety Review Center, all indicators of Fangda Carbon met the requirements, and the “Civil Nuclear Safety Equipment Manufacturing License” successfully completed its third renewal, valid until March 31, 2031.

Since obtaining this qualification in 2011, Fangda Carbon has been deeply engaged in the field of nuclear-grade carbon materials, overcoming multiple “bottleneck” technologies, and achieving a breakthrough in nuclear-grade carbon materials from “0” to “1” through hardcore technology. In 2008, the company undertook relevant topics of the national major science and technology project, forming a multi-field expert team to tackle key issues such as low performance of nuclear-grade carbon products and difficulties in forming and sintering large-sized components. Through hundreds of batches of experiments, the core methods for raw material coke selection were mastered, and an innovative segmented temperature control sintering process was developed, forming a complete manufacturing system that filled the domestic technological gap.

The internal components of carbon piles independently developed by Fangda Carbon were successfully applied in Huaneng Shandong Shidao Bay, the world’s first fourth-generation high-temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration project, achieving performance at an internationally advanced level and marking a breakthrough in the application of nuclear safety-grade carbon materials in China. Subsequently, the subsidiary Chengdu Carbon Materials initiated research on the localization of nuclear-grade graphite. In 2019, it collaborated with Russian institutions to conduct full irradiation tests, and the 2024 tests showed that the samples performed excellently under extreme conditions, marking China’s nuclear-grade graphite research among the world’s leaders.

Building on years of technological accumulation in carbon products, Fangda Carbon’s team tackled two core challenges: uniform distribution of boron carbide and thermal stress cracking, achieving the transition of products from laboratory to industrial-scale production, successfully applied in the 600 megawatt demonstration fast reactor project. In 2025, the machining task for the internal components of the carbon pile was completed with high quality in just three months and passed acceptance in one go. Currently, both Fangda Carbon and its subsidiaries hold nuclear safety manufacturing qualifications, leading the field of civil nuclear safety-grade carbon/graphite materials.
