【Caixin Media】 “Chinese consumers’ perception of their financial situation has actually been improving.” At the 114th National Sugar, Wine & Spirits Commodities Fair (referred to as the “Sugar and Liquor Fair”), Qila Lu, Chief Operating Officer of NielsenIQ China, of data analytics firm, put forward such a conclusion that seems to run counter to conventional wisdom.

Lu cited Nielsen survey data as of July 2025, saying that 41% of consumers believe their own financial situation is better than the previous year. This share has increased by 7 percentage points compared with 34% in the same period of 2024. At the same time, 23% of consumers believe their financial situation is worse, which is down by 1 percentage point from 2024. In addition, in a 2025 survey, 60% of consumers said they are more willing to spend money, while the proportion in 2024 was 53%.
