This week
Our country has achieved multiple major breakthroughs in fields such as engineering construction, shipbuilding, and astronomy.
China’s hard-core strength makes headlines again
and keeps refreshing world records.
Lion Rock Ocean Bridge main tower achieves top-out
and refreshes the world record! Around 11:00 on March 26, the key controlling works of the Lion Rock Ocean Passage— the core hub project of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—enabled the Lion Rock Ocean Bridge to top out the east and west main towers, moving on to the construction of the upper structure.
The Lion Rock Ocean Bridge is the world’s first double-deck suspension bridge with a span of over 2,000 meters. It uses a 2,180-meter main span crossing “one span over the river.” Once completed, it will establish five world firsts for double-deck suspension bridges: the main-span length, the number of lanes, the height of the main towers, the diameter of the anchorages, and the diameter of the main cables. Thumbs up for this super project!
“Giant” goes online
New generation of domestically developed ultra-large oil tanker delivered
On March 25, the “Junwang” vessel—a 307,000-deadweight-ton ultra-large oil tanker built by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation Dalian Shipbuilding—was successfully delivered. This is a new generation of ultra-large oil tanker designed and developed independently in our country.
The “Junwang” has an approximate length of 333 meters, a beam of 60 meters, a deck area of over 18,000 square meters, and from the ship’s bottom to the bridge is nearly equivalent to a 20-story building—an authentic “giant.”
International first, #1
Guo Shoujing Telescope releases a spectral data breakthrough of over 30 million entries
Reporters learned from the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on March 24 that, as of now, the number of spectra released by the major national scientific and technological infrastructure—the Guo Shoujing Telescope (LAMOST)—has exceeded 30 million, continuing to rank first internationally among sky-survey projects in terms of the number of spectra released. These spectra have been compiled into the LAMOST DR13 (v1.0) data set and have been officially released to domestic astronomers and international collaborators.
Multiple international firsts
China’s DRO test satellites achieve a series of breakthroughs
Reporters learned at the 2026 Zhongguancun Forum—“Science and Technology Forum on Earth-Moon Space Development and Utilization”—held on March 25 that three test satellites for the three DRO (DRO: distant retrograde orbit) pilot exploration mission deployed independently by the Chinese Academy of Sciences have already been in orbit and conducted tests for two years.
Good news keeps coming from exploration and mining
China discovers the world’s second-largest light rare-earth deposit
Our country’s new round of strategic actions for breakthroughs in prospecting for mineral resources has achieved new results. In the Niuping mining area of Mianing County in Sichuan Province, China has discovered the world’s second-largest light rare-earth deposit.
According to the introduction, in the rare-earth mineral resources verification and exploration project in the Niuping mining area of Mianing County, Sichuan, an additional resource amount of rare-earth oxides totaling 9,665.6 million tons was found, an increase of more than 300%. It is the world’s No. 2 in terms of resource reserves among rare-earth mines under production. Rare-earth oxides are widely used in fields such as magnetic materials and phosphor materials; they are indispensable elements in modern industry and high-end manufacturing.
China’s first
New energy storage AI data analysis platform put into operation
China’s first domestically developed new energy storage artificial intelligence data analysis platform was officially put into operation on March 23. It is said that the platform connects new energy storage equipment of different technical types. Relying on AI’s independent learning and analysis of massive data, the platform can remotely and in real time detect equipment defects and hidden hazards, automatically generate maintenance and operation plans, and quickly handle issues.
At present, the platform has been connected to 8 new energy storage power stations, covering regions including Guangdong, Yunnan, and Hainan. The number of data acquisition points exceeds 2.3 million. After one year of trial operation, the equipment fault rate of the 8 power stations decreased by 34%, the amount of electricity for new-energy utilization increased by about 30%, and the system’s regulation capability has been significantly enhanced.
