On March 27, the Bank of Japan’s new estimate of the country’s natural interest rate indicates that the central bank still has significant room to raise rates. New data suggest that the neutral rate may be between 1.1% and 2.5%, while the current policy rate stands at 0.75%. In a report released on Friday, the bank stated that many indicators used in the latest estimate show that rates are likely to rise gradually. This implies that the upper limit of the neutral rate may be further increased, providing greater room for the Bank of Japan to implement additional rate hikes.
