Over 600 rivers and groundwater monitoring sites in Japan have detected excessive levels of organofluorine compounds.

On March 27, the Japan Ministry of the Environment announced the results of nationwide water quality testing for rivers and groundwater for the fiscal year 2024. The results indicate that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which may impact health, exceeded national guidelines at 629 testing points across 26 prefectures in the country. PFAS is a collective term for various organic fluorinated compounds, such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, widely used in various industrial products. PFAS are not easily broken down, and certain substances within this group have been shown to accumulate in the environment and the human body, leading to health issues. (CCTV News)
