Analysis: Trump Seeks to Leverage Division Between Iranian President and Military to Influence Situation
On April 1, Trump stated that “the president of the new Iranian regime has just requested a ceasefire from the United States.” Analysts noted that Pezeshkian has been serving as the president of Iran since before the conflict and is still the current president. The key issue is that it remains unclear whether he truly holds power or has ever held it. The Iranian presidency is typically a symbolic position, responsible for civil affairs, with policies requiring approval from the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Recently, there have been increasing signs of a rift between the president and the IRGC. Trump’s strategy seems to be to exploit this division by using the president to send a message of peace to the Iranian people while claiming that the IRGC is obstructing negotiations. This could trigger internal turmoil, potentially leading to a change in regime or at least creating instability.
