Japan is currently assessing the situation: dispatching the Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz

According to a report by Jiji Press on March 5, due to the idea proposed by U.S. President Trump to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, the Japanese government is studying the issue intensively and determining what countermeasures Japan could take if the U.S. asks for support. At present, dispatching the Self-Defense Forces requires a legal basis, and Japan’s options are limited. Given that the United Kingdom and France have already sent warships to the Mediterranean to help stabilize the situation, voices within the Japanese government have also raised the concern that Japan cannot “ride for free.” Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will likely face a difficult choice.
