The Trump administration faces its first major statutory deadline for tariff refunds on Friday.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Donald Trump must respond by February 27 (Friday) to a motion by the plaintiff, filed with the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT), seeking expedited payment of an “illegal tariff” and an expedited refund. Trade lawyers say that more than 2,000 cases in which businesses are suing to seek a refund of duties have already been submitted to the U.S. Court of International Trade. The plaintiffs are concerned the government may try to delay the refund process. Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the tariffs imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful, and it gave the federal court system about a month to decide next steps.
