Hormuz Strait | Trump Threatens Europe to Help Open the Strait or Stop Supplying Arms to Ukraine
The war in the Middle East continues. The British Financial Times, citing sources, reports that U.S. President Trump has threatened to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine in order to pressure European allies to help open the Strait of Hormuz.
The report states that Trump has threatened to halt deliveries to Ukraine’s “priority needs list” (PURL). PURL is a NATO weapons procurement program established for Ukraine, funded by European countries, which purchases U.S.-made military equipment to be provided to Ukraine for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that this week he will convene a meeting of about 35 countries to discuss how to restart the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked due to the war in the Middle East. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will chair the meeting, which will evaluate all feasible diplomatic and political measures to restore freedom of navigation, ensure the safety of stranded ships and crews, and resume the transportation of essential goods.
Participating countries will include France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands, among others, who have recently signed a statement expressing their readiness to make appropriate efforts to ensure the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
