Southern China and South China precipitation "upgrade" – beware of hail, thunderstorms, and strong winds
Source: People’s Daily Online
BEIJING, March 27 (Reporter Ouyang Yijia) — The reporter learned from the Central Meteorological Observatory that from March 27 to 28, southern parts of the Yangtze River region and the northern parts of South China will see scattered precipitation, with some areas experiencing moderate rain and locally heavy rain or even torrential rain. In the Tibet Autonomous Region, eastern and southern Qinghai, southern Gansu, the north of the western Sichuan plateau, and the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia, some areas will see heavy snowfall. From March 29 to 31, precipitation in the Yangtze River region and northern parts of South China will strengthen, accompanied by widespread severe convective weather.
Hu Xiao, chief analyst at China Weather Network, said that starting March 29, with the development of the low-level southwest jet stream, moisture-transport conditions will improve significantly. With cold and warm air masses converging, southern regions will experience a large-scale episode of heavy rainfall and severe convective weather. The core period of this rainfall process will be from March 29 to 31. The impact area will cover from the eastern Sichuan Basin to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, extending to northern parts of South China, mainly including Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangdong, as well as eastern Guizhou, northern Guangxi, Fujian, and other areas. In the above-mentioned regions, heavy rain to torrential rain will be widespread, and locally torrential rain is possible.
“Severe convective weather such as strong thunderstorm winds, hail, and short-duration heavy rainfall will occur in the central and eastern parts of Guizhou, the northern parts of Hunan and Jiangxi, as well as northern Guangxi and northern Guangdong, among others. This is a typical mixed convective weather process,” Hu Xiao said. “Attention should be especially paid to the fact that the main impact of the strong rainfall on March 29 will be in eastern Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, and other areas.”
Hu Xiao also reminds that on March 29, precipitation intensity will be relatively high in Changsha and Nanchang, with heavy rain expected, accompanied by severe convective weather such as lightning and thunder.
To prevent severe convective weather, Hu Xiao advises that if hail occurs, the public should quickly go indoors or find sturdy shelter to reduce risk; if there is no shelter, they should squat down with their back to the wind to prevent being struck by hail. At the same time, pay attention to whether there are dangerous items nearby such as fragile glass to avoid casualties caused by secondary injuries. When engaging in outdoor activities, people should return indoors as soon as possible. If there is standing water, carefully observe road conditions to prevent falls into pits. While driving, avoid road sections with standing water. Short-term heavy rainfall can easily cause rapid water accumulation, so extra attention is needed. For residents in lower floors, if strong rainfall occurs or water levels rise, they should promptly cut off the power supply to ensure electrical safety.
