(MENAFN) The Indian Navy has formally inducted a new warship into its fleet, capable of deploying the BrahMos supersonic missile, enhancing both its combat and strategic maritime capabilities.

The stealth frigate, INS Taragiri, was commissioned at Visakhapatnam, headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, by Rajnath Singh on Friday.

“This commissioning highlights the strategic and maritime importance of India’s eastern seaboard as well as the Indian Navy’s sustained focus on strengthening its combat readiness and operational might while strongly reinforcing the objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat [Self-reliant India],” Singh wrote on X.

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, INS Taragiri displaces 6,670 tonnes and incorporates more than 75% indigenous components, marking a major milestone for the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The frigate features a high-speed, long-endurance design powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system and is equipped with a versatile weapons suite. Alongside BrahMos missiles, it carries medium-range surface-to-air missiles and an anti-submarine warfare system.

The BrahMos missile system is jointly developed by Defense Research and Development Organization and NPO Mashinostroyeniya, which also produces Oniks missiles.

Beyond combat operations, INS Taragiri is expected to play a significant role in humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions, highlighting its multi-role operational capability.
