ME News update, April 6 (UTC+8), 2026 sees a sharp rebound in software engineering job demand, refuting the popular view that AI will replace engineering roles. According to TrueUp data, there are currently more than 67k software engineering job openings worldwide, reaching a three-year high; the number of positions is nearly double the trough seen in mid-2023. Since the beginning of this year, the number of open positions has grown by about 30%. Despite the rapid development of AI technology, tech companies’ demand for software engineers and AI-related roles remains strong. TrueUp founder Amit Taylor said, “The idea that ‘AI replaces engineers’ is not reflected in hiring data; companies still have strong demand for top engineers.” However, as AI gradually penetrates the economic sector, it may in the future reduce some roles, or make outstanding engineers even more valuable, leading to intensified competition among companies.
