Today I want to share something that has been fundamental in my trading strategy: the engulfing candlestick pattern. It’s one of those patterns you see once and never forget, especially when it appears at key moments in the market.

The main idea is simple but powerful. An engulfing candle forms when one candle closes completely within the range of the previous one, covering both the body and the wicks. What’s interesting is that it usually shows up right when a trend is about to reverse. If you see a strong bearish trend, and suddenly a bullish engulfing candle appears, it signals a possible turning point. The opposite also works.

Now, the first step is knowing how to identify it on your chart. You need to confirm that the current candle fully engulfs the previous one. It’s not just that it covers the body, but also that the highest and lowest points fall within that range. That’s what makes it a valid trading signal.

To enter a trade when you see this pattern, you have options. Some traders enter immediately after the engulfing candle forms. Others prefer to wait a little longer, let the price test again the midpoint of that candle’s body, and then enter. Both strategies work depending on your style.

The most important thing is your stop loss. This is where many people fail. I take the wick of the engulfing candle and add approximately one-third or half of the body. This protects you from those liquidity sweeps that bother us so much. You don’t want to get liquidated right when the pattern was working.

In the end, the engulfing candle is a versatile tool. Some see it as an entry point; others see it as a reversal confirmation. It all depends on how you combine it with your overall market analysis. What works for me might not be exactly what works for you, which is why it’s important to experiment and adapt.

If you’re just starting with this, I recommend practicing on historical charts first. You’ll see how this pattern shows up again and again at moments of change. It’s one of those trading lessons that’s worth mastering well from the very beginning.
