Russia’s President’s press secretary Peskov said on the 18th that Russia is considering measures to shut off gas to Europe in advance. At that day’s regular press conference, Peskov said that, regarding remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier that Russia may stop supplying natural gas to the European market in advance, Russia is conducting an in-depth review of the issue.

He said that the war between the U.S. and Iran has caused sharp upheaval in the energy market, making market dynamics difficult to predict. Therefore, Russia is conducting thorough analysis on the basis of fully considering all specific circumstances.

Putin said on the 4th of this month that, given the EU’s intention to completely abandon purchasing Russian natural gas, Russia may stop supplying gas to the EU in advance. He emphasized that this is not a final decision, and he will instruct government departments to study the issue.

The EU’s 27 member states officially adopted regulations on the gradual ban on pipeline natural gas and liquefied natural gas imports from Russia on January 26. A comprehensive ban on liquefied natural gas imports from Russia will take effect at the beginning of 2027, while a comprehensive ban on pipeline natural gas imports will take effect in the autumn of 2027. In 2025, Russian natural gas accounted for about 13% of the EU’s total imports, worth more than €15 billion. (Xinhua)
