Gate VIP API Trading Volume Accelerator: How Pending Orders Affect VIP Level Analysis
VIP tiers are a core variable in Gate trading costs. For API users who rely on programmatic strategies, one question keeps coming up: can the trading volume generated by placing orders be counted toward tier evaluation? The answer is clear and direct—yes. This article breaks down Gate VIP’s dual-track evaluation logic, the rules for calculating API trading volume, and the exclusive activities you can participate in right now.
Placing Orders vs. Taking Orders: How Trading Volume Is Generated
In Gate’s trading system, each matched trade involves two parties: the maker (placing the order) and the taker (taking the order).
The maker places an order at a specified price. If the order does not immediately match with existing orders in the order book, it goes into the order list and waits to be matched. The taker places an order at a price that already exists in the order book, and it matches with the maker’s order immediately. Together, they complete a trade; the corresponding trade value is then credited to both parties’ accounts.
For users executing programmatic strategies via API, this mechanism means: regardless of whether your strategy provides liquidity (maker/placing orders) or executes actively (taker/taking orders), as long as your order is successfully matched, it generates the corresponding trading volume. The key question is how these trading volumes affect your VIP tier.
Dual-Track VIP Evaluation: The Core Value of API Trading Volume
Gate’s VIP tier system uses dual-track, parallel evaluation criteria. Each month on the 1st, based on data from the previous calendar month, the system automatically assigns tiers using the higher of two conditions: the “total trading volume over the past 30 days” and the “average daily GT holdings.”
The total trading volume calculation covers spot, margin, and derivatives trading. For derivatives trading, the system uses notional value multiplied by the leverage factor and counts it in full. This means users using leverage strategies can accumulate trading volume faster.
The execution volume generated through API trading is treated the same as other trading methods. Whether you place orders manually or execute programmatic strategies through the API interface, as long as the order is successfully matched, the corresponding trade value is included in the total trading volume over the past 30 days—serving as the basis for VIP tier evaluation.
Key Rules for API Trading Volume
There are 3 rules that API trading users should pay close attention to.
First, the weighted formula for the past 30 days’ total trading volume is: spot month trading volume (including flash exchange) + derivatives month trading volume × 40% + options month trading volume × 5%. Derivatives trading volume is discounted by 40% when included in total trading value—meaning that with the same notional value, spot trading has higher cumulative efficiency. When planning your API strategy, you can adjust the weighting of different trading products accordingly.
Second, derivatives points and VIP tiers are two separate systems. Per Gate’s official rules, the execution volume generated by API trading generally does not earn Gate derivatives points. However, that does not affect the total trading volume over the past 30 days required for VIP tier evaluation. The derivatives points system is designed to reward genuine market participation, while the VIP tier system covers all effective matched volume; the two do not interfere with each other.
Third, API trading share is an important user profiling metric. In multiple Gate exclusive activities, users whose API trading share over the past 30 days is not less than 60% are classified as high-proportion API users and can participate in the corresponding incentive programs.
Exclusive API Trading Activities: From Scale to Benefits
For high-proportion API trading users, Gate has launched several exclusive activities.
The Institutional Engine Program is for professional institutional clients that use API automation for trading and whose API trading share is not less than 60%. Eligible users can apply for a VIP fast track to experience fee discounts and added value services brought by higher tiers within 30 days.
For users who already have a relatively high trading scale but have not yet reached the target VIP tier, the Rush Challenge Program offers additional upgrade opportunities. VIP tier 3 to 7 users who confirm their enrollment and, within 30 days, achieve trading volume of not less than $50M and an API trading share of not less than 60% can unlock a VIP 10 tier experience period and additional rewards.
It should be noted that some exclusive activities impose specific restrictions on participant identity. For example, certain prediction-type or competition-type activities explicitly exclude users whose API trading share over the past 30 days is not less than 60% from participating, with the goal of ensuring that participants are primarily real strategy-oriented users. This reflects the platform’s fine-grained operational strategy for different user types.
GT Holdings: A Supplementary Path for API Traders
For users whose API trading strategy is mainly low-frequency with large amounts, GT holdings provide a supplementary path to maintain VIP tiers. The average daily GT holdings used for evaluation is assessed by the average holdings over the last 7 days of each month. The holding range includes spot wallets, margin accounts, and wealth-management accounts (e.g., YuE Bao).
According to Gate market data, as of April 8, 2026, the GT price is $6.61. The corresponding asset values for each tier of GT holdings are as follows: VIP tier 1 (1,000 GT) is approximately $6,610; VIP tier 5 (20,000 GT) is approximately $132,200. Users can deposit GT into YuE Bao. While earning interest from a demand-deposit (current) yield, the assets still count toward the VIP holding snapshot—achieving both objectives of earning on holdings and maintaining tier status.
The Complete Chain From Trading Volume to Fees
The higher your VIP tier, the lower the trading fees for both spot and derivatives. Below is the core fee structure: VIP 0 spot fee is 0.20%, derivatives Maker fee is 0.020% and Taker fee is 0.050%; VIP 1 spot fee is 0.18%, derivatives Maker fee is 0.018% and Taker fee is 0.045%; VIP 5 spot fee is 0.10%, derivatives Maker fee is 0.010% and Taker fee is 0.025%; VIP 9 spot fee is 0.02%, and derivatives enjoy an express fee rate.
Taking a user with monthly trading volume of $50M as an example: upgrading from VIP 0 to VIP 5 saves $12,500 per month in derivatives fees alone. For API programmatic traders, the accumulation of trading volume directly translates into higher tiers; higher tiers then translate into lower fees. It’s a complete cost-optimization chain.
How to Start API Trading
Gate provides a complete API trading infrastructure, supporting programmatic execution of spot, margin, and derivatives trading. Users can generate API keys in account settings and configure read, trading, and withdrawal permissions as needed. The API documentation covers all public market data interfaces and private trading interfaces, providing the technical foundation for developing quantitative strategies.
If you already have trading records from other platforms, Gate supports directly matching the corresponding VIP tier based on historical trading volume. Just submit proof of your trading volume from the past 30 days. After the review is approved, you can obtain the corresponding tier on Gate. This means that from the very first day you trade, you can execute your strategy with the matched fees—without having to accumulate from scratch.
Conclusion
VIP tiers are not a static label; they are the result of dynamic optimization. API placing orders (maker) and taking orders (taker) jointly form the foundation for trading volume, and GT holdings provide an additional path. Together, they give users flexible options. Understanding the rules, matching activities, and adjusting your strategy—every step points to the same goal: achieving lower execution costs at the same trading scale. Log in to your Gate account, review your current tier and upgrade progress, and let data drive your next trading decisions.
