General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the country, Su Lin, is reported to visit China next week.

Reuters, citing three people with knowledge of the matter, reported that Vietnam’s top leader, Su Lin, plans to visit China next week and meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Two of the people said the visit is expected to take place from April 14 to 17. The report said the visit is still being planned and could be postponed due to scheduling issues. The trip is intended to strengthen relations between Vietnam and China. At present, both countries are worried about energy security and face tariff pressure from the United States.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that, at this stage, it has no information it can provide about the visit. Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for comment.

On Tuesday, Vietnam’s National Assembly unanimously approved Su Lin, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, to concurrently serve as President. This is likely Su Lin’s first overseas trip after being elected President. At 69 years old, Su Lin will hold dual authorization to lead the country over the next five years, making him the most power-concentrated leader in the area in decades and changing the long-standing tradition of divided-and-shared governance under the “four-horse chariot” arrangement—that is, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President, Prime Minister, and Chair of the National Assembly.
