Broadcom confirms it will deliver chips to the AI startup Anthropic PBC using Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), offering the market an alternative to NVIDIA technology.

A Monday filing shows Broadcom and Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., have reached a long-term agreement to provide the relevant chips, and have signed a supply assurance agreement that runs through 2031.

The three companies also expanded a strategic partnership under which Anthropic will gain access to roughly 3.5 gigawatts of computing power. The arrangement will begin in 2027.

“Anthropic’s use of the incremental AI computing power described above depends on its continued commercial success. As part of this deployment, the parties are discussing it with specific operational and financial partners,” Broadcom said in the filing.

After the above filings were released, Broadcom’s share price rose 3% in after-hours trading. CEO Hock Tan had mentioned the collaboration in last month’s earnings call.

Google’s TPUs were originally designed to speed up the operation of its search engine, but they are now also used to develop and run AI software. Broadcom completes the full chip design based on specifications provided by Google, and then hands it off for production in the manufacturing phase.
