The New York Times published a detailed investigation suggesting that British cryptographer and co-founder of Blockstream, Adam Back, may be the creator of Bitcoin, known under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
Journalist John Carreru examined over 130,000 messages from early "cypherpunk" mailing lists, involving both Satoshi and Back. He narrowed down the hundreds of participants to one candidate by analyzing writing style, spelling, and other linguistic features.
Back had previously been frequently mentioned among potential candidates for the role of Satoshi, and many of the arguments presented have already been discussed within the crypto community. However, the journalist conducted extensive research, organizing disparate facts and correlating them into a unified theory.
As early as 1997, Back described key elements of the future Bitcoin: a decentralized network, limited issuance, independence from banks, and user privacy preservation. He also proposed using a proof-of-work system called Hashcash, which was later referenced in Bitcoin’s technical concept. Back himself consistently denies creating Bitcoin and has not responded to numerous journalist inquiries.
Interestingly, in 2024, the HBO documentary "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" named Bitcoin’s creator as developer Peter Todd. Todd and Back are personally acquainted and even appear together in the film, where both explicitly deny being Satoshi.
Over the 17 years of Bitcoin’s existence, various candidates have been proposed as its creator, but none have been confirmed. Satoshi himself has not made contact since 2011. It is believed that he owns more than 5% of existing Bitcoins worth billions of dollars. Coins on wallets attributed to him have remained inactive for years. Back, on the other hand, sold part of his Bitcoins in summer 2025.
