On March 31, at the 14th International Energy Storage Summit and Exhibition held today, Chen Haisheng, President of the China Academy of Engineering Physics Institute of Engineering Thermophysics Research Institute, and Chairman of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance (CNESA), released the “Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2026.” According to incomplete statistics from CNESA DataLink’s global energy storage database, by the end of 2025, the cumulative installed capacity of global power energy storage projects already in operation reached 496.2GW, up 33.3% year over year. Among them, pumped-storage hydropower’s cumulative installed capacity share fell below 50% for the first time, down 11.5 percentage points compared with the same period in 2024, as the global power energy storage technology mix accelerates toward diversified evolution. At the same time, new-type energy storage maintained a rapid growth momentum, with cumulative installed capacity reaching 278.7GW/687.5GWh, up 68.5%/79.9%. With the share of long-duration energy storage projects continuing to rise, the average energy storage duration of new-type energy storage reached 2.47 hours, up 0.16 hours compared with the same period in 2024.

According to incomplete statistics from CNESA DataLink’s global energy storage database, by the end of 2025, China’s cumulative installed capacity of power energy storage projects already in operation reached 213.3GW, accounting for 43.0% of the global market total, up 54% year over year. The cumulative installed capacity of new-type energy storage reached 144.7GW, accounting for more than two-thirds of the domestic power energy storage total, realizing a 45-fold increase compared with the end of the “13th Five-Year Plan,” and its share in the global new-type energy storage market reached 51.9%. In terms of the technology mix, lithium-ion batteries remain dominant, but as multiple hundred-megawatt-class long-duration energy storage projects have been put into operation one after another, the technology mix is gradually showing a diversification trend. The cumulative installed capacity share of lithium-ion batteries fell slightly by 0.2 percentage points compared with the same period in 2024.

In 2025, the global energy storage market continued to maintain a rapid development trend. The cumulative installed capacity of newly commissioned power energy storage projects for the full year first exceeded 100GW, reaching 123.9GW, up 49.3%. Among them, new-type energy storage’s share of newly added installed capacity exceeded 90%, reaching 113.3GW/305.8GWh, up 52.9%/72.0%.

From the perspective of regional distribution, China, the United States, and Europe remain the three largest regions by market size in the global energy storage market and continue to lead the global energy storage industry. However, with the rapid rise of energy storage markets in the Middle East, Latin America, and other regions, the global energy storage market is gradually expanding into a wider range of regions.

In the white paper released on this occasion, CNESA, combining conservative scenario 1 with ideal scenario 2, presents the following forecasts for the scale of China’s new-type energy storage market for 2026–2030: Under the conservative scenario, new-type energy storage’s cumulative scale is expected to reach 371.2GW by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.7% for 2026–2030. Under the ideal scenario, new-type energy storage’s cumulative scale is expected to reach 450.7GW by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.5% for 2026–2030. (Liu Lili)
