Accused of Being Satoshi Nakamoto, Cryptographer Adam Back Denies the Allegation
Renowned cryptographer and CEO of Blockstream, Adam Back, firmly denies the investigation report by The New York Times (NYT) that suggests he is behind Satoshi Nakamoto. In the report released on Wednesday (08/04), NYT claims to have strong evidence based on writing style (stylometry) and technical track record linking Back’s Hashcash discovery to Bitcoin’s core architecture.
Through his personal X account on Thursday (09/04), Adam Back explained that the similarity is merely coincidental due to his active participation in digital privacy and e-cash research since 1992. He emphasized that he is not Satoshi and does not know the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator. According to Back, the NYT’s claim is just a confirmation bias resulting from the numerous comments he made on the Cypherpunk forum in the past.
In response to the controversy, Michael Saylor also defended himself, stating that past email correspondence evidence shows Back and Satoshi are two different entities. Saylor emphasized that as long as there is no valid proof involving Satoshi’s private keys, all identity theories are just narratives without credible evidence. For the crypto community, Satoshi’s anonymity remains a key pillar in maintaining Bitcoin’s neutrality as a global asset.
