A Nepalese government official said on the 7th that since the beginning of this year, Nepal has had outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in four districts across two provinces.
Indira Sharma, a news officer with the Livestock Services Division under Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, told reporters from Xinhua News Agency that since the beginning of this year, the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been detected at 23 poultry farms in four districts—Morang, Sunsari, Chitwan, and Bagmati—in Nepal. Among them, the first avian influenza outbreak in the country this year was reported in Morang District on March 18.
Sharma said, “We are doing everything possible to control the spread of the outbreak.” According to statistics from the Nepal Livestock Services Division, as of the 4th of this month, about 114,000 poultry in affected areas had been culled, and about 212,000 eggs had been destroyed. (Xinhua)
