On March 11 local time, the Congressional Budget Office released its budget and economic outlook for 2026 to 2036. According to the forecast, the federal budget deficit for the 2026 fiscal year will be $1.9 trillion, increasing to $3.1 trillion by 2036. Relative to the size of the economy, the deficit will account for 5.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2026, rising to 6.7% by 2036, which is higher than the average deficit level of 3.8% over the past 50 years. The main reason for the deficit growth is the rising net interest costs.
