On March 28, news from Xinhua News Agency in China recently published an article interpreting the “14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China.” The article points out that the “Plan” is a policy document outlining China’s development blueprint for the next five years (2026-2030), deploying 109 major engineering projects.
The planning outline emphasizes the cultivation of various types of talent, including “increasing the training and support for strategic scientists, leading technological talents, fundamental research talents, and young scientific and technological talents” and “nurturing outstanding engineers, master craftsmen, and high-skilled talents.”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the top of the eight major engineering projects for “cutting-edge technology breakthroughs” in the next five years, with key development focuses including “developing high-performance AI chips and highly available foundational software stacks” and “accelerating innovative exploration of model infrastructure.”
The article specifically uses smart agriculture as an example, stating it will create a number of new jobs: in the fields, unmanned harvesters running on the ground are guided by navigators, drones flying above for pest control are operated by pilots, while sensors monitoring crop growth require maintenance from IoT engineers; after harvesting agricultural products, cold chain logistics analysts are needed to calculate the optimal path from field to table, and quality traceability engineers use blockchain technology to establish a “digital ID” for each batch of rice.
